Factory of Copies

Year: 2023
Medium: Installation
Materials: Hand-painted wooden structure, synthetic enamel, abrasive paper and pirated DVDs
Dimensions: 80 × 62 × 23 cm

Factory of Copies is an enlarged wooden reproduction of an Ecuadorian matchbox, whose exterior was hand-painted with synthetic enamel. Its drawer remains partially open, revealing the artist’s collection of pirated DVDs, assembled since adolescence. The films are not projected, and viewers cannot handle the contents. They may approach and read the titles, but the archive remains contained.

The installation brings together two forms of reproduction: a hand-painted enlargement of a commercial object and the unauthorized film copies through which the artist encountered much of the cinema that shaped her formative years. Matches and films both hold light in a latent state, awaiting ignition or projection. Here, neither is activated. Cinema appears instead as a material archive: copied, accumulated and held between personal formation and informal circulation.
