Corina Benalcázar (b. 1996, Quito, Ecuador) is an Ecuadorian visual artist and researcher based in Shanghai. Working primarily with installation and painting, she draws attention to everyday objects, images, and situations by removing them from their usual contexts. Through changes in scale, material, and placement, she invites viewers to reconsider how ordinary things are perceived. Her background in film informs her use of framing, duration, and implied narratives.
Some of her installations partially conceal their contents, using sound, scent, light, and material traces to suggest what remains out of sight. Her paintings often develop from staged and photographed scenes, transforming constructed situations into images that resemble suspended film frames. Across both forms, she leaves narratives open rather than providing a complete explanation.
Benalcázar holds a BFA from Universidad Central del Ecuador. She has received two Chinese Government Scholarships: the first supported her film studies at Beijing Film Academy (2022–2023), and the second supports her current master’s degree in Design at East China Normal University in Shanghai, with a focus on public art (2025–2028). She received honorable mentions at the San Antonio National Sculpture Biennial (2021) and the 50th Ambato National Painting Salon (2020). Her research on contemporary art and cinema has been published in Index, Revista de Arte Contemporáneo.
